Pelikan Edelstein

First of all, i would like to thank you very Beate Böker and Simone Bahrs for their kindness and those answers andall the people from the FPN forum for those great questions :-)

How long did it take, from the idea to the manfacturing to launch those inks?
It took more than 1,5 years from the first idea to the final production of the Edelstein ink. The process took so long as the ink contains a totally new formula and the new flacon which revealed some challenges.

Pelikan Edelstein Onyx

Tell us a little about the physical properties of these inks:
Viscosity? Saturation? What sort of color is “onyx”?
Onyx is a black ink. Thanks to the care applied in its research and development laboratories and its own production facilities in Germany, Pelikan guarantees highest quality and superior writing comfort: a special constituent of the new dye-based ink ensures a smooth writing sensation and also maintains the fountain-pen from within. More details have to stay the secret of our chemical department.

How many ml are the bottles?
Will this be the only size bottle?

The flacon contains 50ml . At the moment we will stay with the 50 ml.

What was the motivation for releasing a new line?
In the age of reproducibility a handwritten letter holds a new significance, and signatures are given a distinctive vitality by a special ink. Anyone who wishes to celebrate the art of writing will make the right choice with a flacon from the Edelstein Ink Collection. When it comes to manufacturing ink, virtually no company has a longer history than Pelikan, whose first price list goes back to 1838. With experience spanning more than 170 years, we wanted to create a new ink collection which is special in every respect. The ink differs from the normal ink and stands for a very smooth writing experience. But not only the written word should offer a special experience also the eye should be attracted by the new design of the ink flacon.

What should consumers expect to be different between these inks and existing ones?
The new inks create more a feeling- a world of the written experience. Seven new colours are available: black (onyx, sapphire (blue), topaz (purple-blue), jade (light green), aventurine (green), mandarin (orange) and ruby (dark red).

The new glass flacon also has includes an aspect of jewellery as the design is very attractive and could also be used to place on the table as a jewellery piece.

Will the range be expanded in the future to include more colours?
Everything is possible and surely we will expand the range with more exciting colours.

How were the colours chosen?
Due to the name Edelstein the basis were the colours of precious stones/gems. To define the colours of the precious stones we also made an international market research to find out which colours are the most  wanted by the endusers. The result are the seven top colours we are now offering.

What was the theme behind the bottle design?
The idea behind is that writing and filling the ink should be a very precious moment or experience. Therefore the choice of the perfect writing instrument as well as the ink should something are the most important things. Not only the colour of the ink but also the bottle where the ink is filled have to be something special. The 50ml flacon is cast from solid Italian glass. The high quality gloss and the colour diversity of the inks inspired the name Edelstein Ink Collection. The modern design is perfect for any desk, whether in a manager’s office or on an antique davenport at home.

Why should I buy Edelstein instead of their regular line?
The Edelstein Ink Collection comprises seven brilliant colors with a special ingredient that ensures extra smooth writing and care for the fountain pen.

The German word Edelstein translates as gem stone, and each color corresponds to the beautiful coloring of a gem.

Every 50 ml high-value glass flacon is unique. The rich weight and soft curves make it a pleasure to hold in your hands.

It‘s an ornament on every desk . . .

Eye candy in every detail, a perfect gift for yourself and those you love.

How many fills are they getting from the bottle into a M800?

How about a M1000?
The filling is very easy as you dip the nib entirely into the ink, all the way down to the beginning of the gripping section. The barrel should be filled slowly and evenly. You cannot define the exact number of fillings you can have for each writing instrument.

Is Edelstein meant to be a line of inks with traditional colours, or will they release something a bit more experimenting in the future?
As already mentionnend we will release new colours but more details cannot be given.

How come this range of 7 Edelstein (precious stone / gem) inks contains actually only 6 gems and 1 fruit?
Mandaringranat is also a precious stone….
Is the Pelikan planning in the future to sell inkwells in the Edelstein design?
Not for the moment

How do you manages to fill a M800 or M1000 from this bottle when there is less than 5 ml remaining.
This is a problem of all piston filled writing instruments using the ink in bottles- if the rest in a bottle is less than 5ml just put it in your new bottle.
